To run YPAO on a Yamaha RX-V685, put the supplied microphone at ear height where you sit, plug it into the YPAO MIC jack on the front panel, press ENTER, and stay quiet while the test tones play. When the results appear, select “Save” and unplug the mic. The TV needs to be on the receiver’s input so you can see the prompts. Set the subwoofer’s volume knob to the halfway point first.
Two things trip people up. First, if you use Atmos presence speakers, Zone 2 speakers, bi-amp wiring or Virtual CINEMA FRONT, you have to tell the receiver before you run YPAO. Second, the test tones are loud and you can’t turn them down while they play. The RX-V685 measures from one listening position, so pick the seat you use most.
What YPAO sets for you
YPAO stands for Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimizer. On the RX-V685 it includes R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control), which accounts for sound bouncing off your walls. After the test, you can see four results for each speaker:
- Wiring: whether a speaker’s + and – wires might be swapped.
- Size: whether the speaker is set to “Large” or “Small,” based on how much bass it can handle.
- Distance: how far each speaker is from the microphone, so sound from every speaker reaches you at the same time.
- Level: the volume adjustment for each speaker, so no channel is louder than the others.
YPAO also fine-tunes the receiver’s acoustic settings to suit your room. Afterward, it turns on a feature called YPAO Volume, covered near the end of this guide.
Before you start
1. Tell the receiver about any special speaker layout
YPAO finds the speakers you’ve connected, but it can’t tell how you want some of them used. Set these first under SETUP > “Speaker,” then press SETUP to exit:
| If you use… | Set this first |
|---|---|
| Bi-amp wiring for the front speakers | “Power Amp Assign” |
| Zone 2 speakers in another room | “Power Amp Assign” |
| Surround speakers placed up front (Virtual CINEMA FRONT) | Surround layout in “Configuration” |
| Presence speakers for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X | Presence speaker layout in “Configuration” |
A plain 5.1 or 7.1 setup with nothing on this list can skip this step. On a new or freshly reset receiver, a network setup message may appear when you first turn it on. Press RETURN to skip it for now.
Setting up a secondhand receiver? Start clean. Do a factory reset on the RX-V685 and update its firmware before you calibrate, so the old owner’s settings don’t carry over.
2. Prepare the subwoofer
- Turn the subwoofer on.
- Set its volume knob to half.
- If it has a crossover (or “high cut”) knob, turn it all the way up. The receiver will handle the bass split.
3. Place the microphone

- Put it at your main seat, at the height of your ears when you’re sitting.
- Yamaha recommends a camera tripod. You can use the tripod’s screw to hold the microphone steady.
- Keep a clear path between every speaker and the mic. Don’t stand or sit in the way during the test.
- Keep the mic out of direct sunlight and off hot surfaces. Yamaha specifically says not to set it on top of AV equipment, because the mic is heat sensitive.

4. Quiet the room
Turn off fans, the dishwasher and anything else that hums. Unplug any headphones from the PHONES jack. Yamaha says not to have headphones connected during YPAO.
How to run YPAO on the RX-V685
- Press the power button on the remote to turn on the receiver.
- Turn on the TV and switch it to the input connected to the receiver’s HDMI OUT jack.
- Plug the YPAO microphone into the YPAO MIC jack on the front panel. The YPAO screen appears on the TV. (To back out now, just unplug the mic.)
- Press ENTER. The test starts after a 10-second countdown, or press ENTER again to start right away. Step out of the path between the speakers and the mic.
- Wait while each speaker plays test tones. If you need to pause, press RETURN.
- Read the results when they appear on the TV. To see the details, select “Measurement result” and press ENTER.
- Use the cursor keys to select “Save” and press ENTER. The new speaker settings take effect.
- Unplug the microphone. Calibration is done.
The new settings are applied only when you select “Save,” so don’t skip step 7.
Reading the results
Look at the results screen before you press Save. It can catch real wiring mistakes. The most useful checks:
- Distance should be close to what a tape measure would show. If one speaker is far off, make sure nothing blocks it, then run the test again.
- Wiring marked “Reverse” means that speaker’s red and black wires might be swapped (see WARNING 1 below).
- Level values near the ±10 dB limit usually mean a mismatched speaker, a blocked speaker, or a subwoofer set much too loud or soft.
YPAO error messages and fixes
An error stops the measurement. On the error screen you can choose “Retry” to start over or “Quit” to exit. For ERROR 5 and ERROR 9 only, you can also choose “Proceed” to continue.
| Message | What’s wrong | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ERROR 1 | Front speakers not detected | Quit, turn the receiver off and check the front speaker wires |
| ERROR 2 | A surround speaker not detected | Quit, turn off and check that speaker’s wires |
| ERROR 3 | A front presence speaker not detected | Quit, turn off and check that speaker’s wires |
| ERROR 4 | A surround back speaker not detected | Quit, turn off and check that speaker’s wires |
| ERROR 5 | Too much background noise | Quiet the room and retry, or choose “Proceed” to measure again while ignoring the noise |
| ERROR 6 | Surround back speakers connected without surround speakers | Connect surround speakers first; surround backs need them |
| ERROR 7 | Microphone was unplugged | Plug it firmly into YPAO MIC and retry |
| ERROR 8 | Microphone can’t hear the test tones | Reseat the mic and retry; if it keeps happening, contact Yamaha service |
| ERROR 9 | You canceled the test | Retry, choose “Proceed,” or “Quit” |
| ERROR 10 | Internal error | Quit, turn the receiver off and on; if it repeats, contact Yamaha service |
YPAO warning messages
Warnings appear after the test finishes. You can still save the results, but Yamaha recommends fixing the cause and running YPAO again.
- WARNING 1 – reverse polarity. Open “Measurement result” > “Wiring” to see which speaker shows “Reverse.” Check that the + and – wires match at both ends. If they’re correct, you can ignore it. Yamaha says some speakers and rooms trigger this warning even when the wiring is fine.
- WARNING 2 – speaker too far. A speaker measured more than 24 m (80 ft) away, shown as “>24.00m (>80.0ft)” under “Distance.” In a normal living room, that points to a problem with that speaker’s placement or connection. Yamaha’s fix is to exit YPAO, turn the receiver off, and put the speaker within 24 m (80 ft) of your seat.
- WARNING 3 – big level differences. A speaker shows “>+10.0dB” or “<-10.0dB” under “Level.” Check its wiring and position and the subwoofer’s volume knob. Yamaha recommends using matching speakers, or ones with specs as similar as possible.
After calibration
YPAO Volume is now on
After a successful measurement, YPAO turns on “YPAO Volume” in the OPTION menu. It adjusts the bass and treble levels automatically as you change the volume, so sound stays natural even at low volume. For late-night listening, Yamaha suggests using it together with Adaptive DRC, which evens out the gap between loud and quiet sounds. If you like a flatter sound at low volume, you can turn YPAO Volume off in the same menu.
Undo your own tweaks with Setup Reload
It’s fine to adjust speaker levels by ear after YPAO. If you end up liking your changes less, go back to the saved measurement:
- Press SETUP.
- Select “Speaker” and press ENTER.
- Select “YPAO Result” and press ENTER.
- Select “Setup Reload” and press ENTER.
- Press SETUP to exit.
When to run YPAO again
- You moved a speaker, the couch or the TV.
- You added, replaced or rewired speakers, including adding presence speakers (set “Configuration” first).
- You fixed a problem YPAO warned you about.
- You factory reset the receiver. The reset erases YPAO’s results.
For Yamaha’s version of these steps, see the manual’s pages on running YPAO and YPAO error messages.
