To factory reset a Yamaha RX-V685, put it in standby, hold STRAIGHT on the front panel and press the MAIN ZONE power key, press PROGRAM until “INIT” shows on the front display, press STRAIGHT until it reads “ALL,” then press MAIN ZONE power to go to standby and press it once more to turn the receiver back on.
The reset lives in a hidden front-panel menu called ADVANCED SETUP, so you work from the buttons on the receiver and read the small display on its face. You don’t need the remote or the TV. Keep in mind that “ALL” wipes every setting: Wi-Fi, speaker calibration, input names, Bluetooth and the rest. If the receiver is only frozen, a simple forced restart (covered next) may fix it without erasing anything.
First, try a forced restart if the receiver is frozen
Yamaha’s manual says an RX-V685 that stops responding usually has a frozen internal microcomputer. Lightning, a strong static shock, or a dip in household power can cause it. That’s why a receiver can act strangely after a storm or power outage. The fix for that is a restart, not a reset.
- Press and hold the MAIN ZONE power key on the front panel for more than 15 seconds. The receiver reboots.
- If it still won’t respond, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, then plug it back in.
A restart keeps all of your settings. Only move on to a reset if the receiver works but behaves badly: settings you can’t undo, a network that won’t reconnect, odd sound you can’t track down, or you’re passing the receiver on to someone else.
Optional: back up your settings to a USB drive
The RX-V685 can save its settings to a USB flash drive and load them back later. This is handy if you’re resetting as a test and might want your old setup back. It won’t help if your settings are the problem, because restoring them brings the problem back too.
You’ll need a USB flash drive formatted as FAT16 or FAT32. The backup uses the same ADVANCED SETUP menu as the reset.
- Plug the USB drive into the USB jack on the front panel.
- Open ADVANCED SETUP (steps 1–3 in the reset section below).
- Press PROGRAM until “BKUP/RSTR” appears.
- Press STRAIGHT to choose “BKUP.”
- Press INFO on the front panel. A confirmation message appears on the front display.
- Press INFO again. Don’t turn the receiver off while it saves.
- When “Complete” appears, press MAIN ZONE power to go to standby, then turn the receiver on again.
The file is saved to the top folder of the drive as “MC_backup_(model name).dat.” The receiver can’t overwrite an old backup, so move any earlier file to another folder first. Account names and passwords aren’t included in the backup. If “Failed” appears, check that the drive is FAT16/FAT32 and firmly seated, then try again. To load a backup later, follow the same steps but choose “RSTR.”
How to reset the RX-V685 to factory settings
You’ll use four controls on the front panel: MAIN ZONE power, STRAIGHT (its label also reads CONNECT), the PROGRAM keys, and the front display. The receiver must be plugged in.

- Press MAIN ZONE power to put the receiver in standby.
- Press and hold STRAIGHT on the front panel.
- Keep holding STRAIGHT and press MAIN ZONE power. Let go when text appears on the front display. The first ADVANCED SETUP item is “SP IMP.” (speaker impedance), shown with its current setting. That tells you you’re in the right menu.
- Press PROGRAM to move through the items until “INIT” appears.
- Press STRAIGHT to switch the INIT setting until it shows “ALL.” If you stop on “CANCEL,” nothing is reset.
- Press MAIN ZONE power. The receiver goes into standby and applies the reset.
- Press MAIN ZONE power again to turn the receiver on. It starts up with Yamaha’s factory settings.
After the restart, the receiver acts like a new unit. It’s no longer on your network, and the speaker settings are back to Yamaha’s defaults (all speakers “Small,” an 80 Hz crossover, 3.00 m / 10.0 ft distances and 0.0 dB levels).

VIDEO, ALL or CANCEL: which INIT option to pick
The INIT item gives you three choices. Most guides mention only “ALL,” but the smaller option can save you some work.
| INIT choice | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| VIDEO | Restores the default settings for video configurations only | A picture problem started after you changed video settings, and you want to keep your audio, speaker and network setup |
| ALL | Restores the default settings for the whole unit | A true factory reset: selling the receiver, or a fresh start when nothing else worked |
| CANCEL | Does not initialize anything | You opened the menu by mistake or changed your mind |
What to set up again after a full reset
Work through this list in order. Doing it this way keeps you from running calibration twice.
- Speaker impedance (6-ohm speakers only). The factory setting is for 8-ohm speakers. If your speakers are rated at 6 ohms and you had set “6 Ω MIN” before, check it again. Open ADVANCED SETUP the same way. “SP IMP.” is the first item. Press STRAIGHT to pick “6 Ω MIN,” then press MAIN ZONE power.
- Remote control ID. If your remote was switched to a different ID and the front display shows “RemID Mismatch,” the receiver and remote no longer agree. Fix it with the “REMOTE ID” item in ADVANCED SETUP, or change the remote’s ID.
- Network. The receiver won’t be on Wi-Fi anymore. Our guide to connecting the RX-V685 to Wi-Fi covers the MusicCast app and on-screen methods.
- Speaker layout, then YPAO. If you use presence (Atmos) speakers, Zone 2 speakers or bi-amp wiring, set “Power Amp Assign” and “Configuration” in the Speaker menu first. Then run YPAO again, because your old calibration has been erased.
- Bluetooth. Pair your phone again and reconnect any wireless headphones. See using Bluetooth with the RX-V685.
- HDMI and TV control. If you used your TV remote to control the receiver’s volume, check the HDMI Control setting in the Setup menu again.
- Input names, sound programs and SCENE presets. These go back to defaults too. Set them up again to match your devices.
If the reset doesn’t work
The receiver just turns on normally
ADVANCED SETUP only opens if the receiver starts from standby and you’re already holding STRAIGHT when you press power. Put it back in standby, press and hold STRAIGHT first, then press MAIN ZONE power while still holding it.
The front-panel buttons do nothing
Do the forced restart described above: hold MAIN ZONE power for more than 15 seconds, or unplug the receiver and plug it back in. Then try the reset again.
“RemID Mismatch” appears after the reset
The receiver went back to its default remote ID, but your remote didn’t. Change the “REMOTE ID” item in ADVANCED SETUP to match the remote.
The original problem is still there
A reset only restores settings. It doesn’t install new software. If the receiver still acts up, update the RX-V685’s firmware, since Yamaha’s updates include bug fixes. If the front display shows “Internal Error,” Yamaha’s manual says to contact an authorized Yamaha dealer or service center.
Common questions
Can I reset the RX-V685 with the remote or the MusicCast app?
Yamaha’s manual only describes the front-panel ADVANCED SETUP method shown above. The Setup menu you open with the remote doesn’t list a factory reset.
Is there a way to reset only the network settings?
The RX-V685 doesn’t have a separate network reset. To fix a bad connection, run the Wi-Fi setup again. The new settings replace the old ones. If that doesn’t help, INIT > ALL clears the network settings along with everything else.
Will I have to sign in to streaming services again?
Plan on it. A full reset returns the unit to factory settings, and Yamaha notes that the USB backup doesn’t save account names or passwords.
For the official wording of each step, see Yamaha’s pages on using the ADVANCED SETUP menu, restoring the default settings (INIT) and backing up and restoring settings.
