To connect an Onkyo TX-NR6100 to Wi-Fi, stand the wireless antenna up. Then open the Setup menu, go to 5. Hardware > Network, set “Wi-Fi” to “On,” select “Wi-Fi Setup,” and press ENTER on “Start.” Pick your network and enter its password.
If the receiver is brand new or was just reset, you don’t need the menu at all. The Initial Setup wizard asks about the network the first time you turn it on. The TX-NR6100 works with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. You can also plug in an Ethernet cable instead, which is the most reliable option if your router is nearby.
Before you start
- Raise the antenna. Onkyo says to stand the wireless antenna on the back of the receiver upright for Wi-Fi. The same antenna is used for Bluetooth.
- Have your network name and password ready. Onkyo recommends knowing your network name (SSID) before you scan. If your router has a WPS button, you can connect without typing the password.
- Connect the receiver to your TV. You’ll make choices on the TV screen with the remote’s cursor buttons, ENTER, and the back button.
- Stop any streaming. If you’re switching the receiver between wired and Wi-Fi, Onkyo says to stop the network service first. That means stop anything playing from the NET input and end any group playback.
Option 1: Connect during Initial Setup (new or reset receiver)
The wizard appears the first time you turn on the receiver. It also comes back each time you power on until you finish it or choose “Never Show Again.” To start it by hand later, go to 7. Miscellaneous > Initial Setup in the Setup menu.
- Switch your TV to the input the receiver is plugged into, and turn the receiver on.
- Pick your language and press ENTER.
- When the wizard asks whether to set up the network connection, select Yes and press ENTER.
- Read the privacy statement. Select Accept and press ENTER. Network services that need a sign-in won’t work until you accept.
- The wizard asks if you want to use Chromecast built-in to connect. Select No for the standard Wi-Fi setup on the TV. (The Yes route is explained below.)
- Select Wireless. (Choose Wired if you’ve plugged in an Ethernet cable.)
- Select Scan Networks. The receiver searches for nearby routers and shows a list.
- Select your network name and press ENTER.
- Choose how to sign in. Select Enter Password to type the Wi-Fi password, or Push Button to use your router’s WPS button.
- If you chose Enter Password, type it with the on-screen keyboard, then confirm. If you chose Push Button, press the WPS button on your router when the TV tells you to.
- Continue through the rest of the wizard: speaker setup, Zone 2 test, ARC, and room calibration.

Tips for typing the password
- Select A/a on the screen and press ENTER to switch between capital and lowercase letters. Passwords are case-sensitive.
- Press MEMORY on the remote to switch between hiding the password with “*” and showing it. Showing it makes typos easier to spot.
- Press CLEAR on the remote to erase everything you’ve typed and start over.
Option 2: Connect from the Setup menu (already set up)
Use this if you skipped the network step, changed routers, or moved the receiver from an Ethernet cable to Wi-Fi.
- Press the Setup button on the remote, or SETUP on the front panel.
- Select 5. Hardware and press ENTER.
- Select Network and press ENTER.
- Set Wi-Fi to On. Its default is Off(Wired), which means the receiver expects an Ethernet cable.
- Select Wi-Fi Setup. With “Start” showing, press ENTER.
- Follow the prompts on the TV to choose your network and enter the password, or use the router’s push button.
- Go back to the Network screen and check Wi-Fi Status. It should show your network name (SSID) and signal strength.
Which connection method should you pick?
| Method | Where you find it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Enter Password | Wireless > Scan Networks | Most homes. Works with any router if you know the password. |
| Push Button | Wireless > Scan Networks | Routers with a WPS button. No typing, but see the warning in troubleshooting about routers with more than one network name. |
| Use iOS Device (iOS7 or later) | Wireless | iPhone or iPad owners. The receiver copies the Wi-Fi settings from your Apple device, so you don’t type the password. |
| Chromecast built-in (Yes) | First question after the privacy statement | People who already use the Google Home app. Setup continues in the app. |
| Wired | Wired, or “Wi-Fi” set to Off(Wired) | Receivers close to the router. Plug a cable into the ETHERNET port. No password needed. |
| Other… | Bottom of the network list | Hidden networks that don’t show up in the scan. |
If you choose the Chromecast route, you’ll need the Google Home app from Google Play or the App Store. Onkyo’s setup page lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12.0 or later as of February 2021. Google’s app then walks you through the rest.
How to tell it worked
- Wi-Fi Status under 5. Hardware > Network shows your network name and signal strength.
- Network Check on the same screen tests the connection. It becomes selectable once the receiver’s network functions have started.
- Press NET on the remote. The network services list should load, and the network indicator on the front display lights up. If it’s blinking instead, the receiver isn’t properly connected to your home network.
Once you’re connected, the first thing worth doing is checking for new software. Our guide to updating the TX-NR6100 firmware over the network takes about 20 minutes.
If the TX-NR6100 won’t connect to Wi-Fi
Your network isn’t in the list
- Your router may be set to hide its network name, or its “ANY connection” setting may be off. Select Other… at the bottom of the list, press ENTER, and type the network name and password yourself.
- Check that the antenna is standing up, then scan again.
- If your router shows separate names for its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other one. The 2.4 GHz band usually reaches farther, especially through walls.
Push Button connected to the wrong network
Some routers broadcast more than one network name. Onkyo warns that the WPS button on these routers can connect the receiver to a different network than the one you wanted. Use Enter Password instead so you choose the exact network.
The password is right, but it still fails
- Onkyo suggests trying the manual setup if the automatic method fails. Use Scan Networks > Enter Password, or Other… to type everything in.
- Unplug the power cords of both the receiver and the router, then plug them back in. Or just restart the router.
Music keeps cutting out
Other wireless gear can interfere with Wi-Fi. Onkyo says changing the channel on your wireless router can help. If the router is close enough, an Ethernet cable avoids the issue entirely.
It connects, but streaming services won’t work
- Make sure the privacy statement is accepted. It’s under 5. Hardware > Network as Privacy Statement. If it says “Not Accepted,” services that need a sign-in won’t work.
- Check that other devices in your home can reach the internet.
- Some internet providers require a proxy server. Enter it under Proxy URL and Proxy Port if yours does.
You need a fixed IP address
By default, DHCP is set to Enable, so the router gives the receiver its address automatically. If your network needs a fixed address, set DHCP to Disable and enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS Server yourself.
If you’ve changed so many network settings that you’d rather start over, a TX-NR6100 factory reset brings back the Initial Setup wizard’s clean slate. Just remember it erases your speaker settings too.
Useful settings once you’re online
- Friendly Name: Changes the name the receiver shows in apps, up to 31 characters. Handy if you have more than one Onkyo on the network.
- Network Standby (under 5. Hardware > Power Management): On by default. It lets an app like Onkyo Controller turn the receiver on over the network. It uses a little more power in standby.
- Onkyo Controller app: Your phone must be on the same network as the receiver. Once it is, the app finds the receiver automatically.
- Second room: AirPlay, Spotify Connect, and music servers can play in Zone 2 too. Our Zone 2 setup guide explains the “Remote Play Zone” setting that decides which room they play in.
