How to Connect a Denon AVR-S570BT to a TV With eARC or ARC

To connect a Denon AVR-S570BT to your TV, run one HDMI cable from the TV’s HDMI port labeled eARC or ARC to the receiver’s HDMI OUT MONITOR jack, then select the receiver’s TV Audio input. With an eARC TV, the receiver turns eARC on by itself. With an older ARC TV, you also need to go to SETUP > Video > HDMI Setup and set ARC to On, because it’s off out of the box.

That single cable does two jobs. It sends video from the receiver to the TV, and it sends the TV’s own sound (streaming apps, antenna channels) back to the receiver. If your TV has HDMI but no ARC or eARC port, you’ll need an optical cable as well. A TV with no HDMI at all can’t be connected to this receiver.

Step 1: Find the right ports and cable

On your TV

Look at the TV’s HDMI ports. One of them should be marked eARC or ARC (sometimes “eARC/ARC”). That’s the only port that can send sound back to the receiver. If none are marked, check your TV’s manual or spec sheet before you buy anything.

On the receiver

The S570BT has four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output. The output is labeled MONITOR with “eARC/ARC” under HDMI OUT. That’s the one that goes to your TV. The four inputs, labeled CBL/SAT, MEDIA PLAYER, Blu-ray, and GAME, are for your cable box, streaming stick, disc player, and game console.

Step 2: Connect the cables

  1. Turn off the receiver and the TV.
  2. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the TV’s eARC or ARC port.
  3. Plug the other end into the receiver’s HDMI OUT MONITOR jack.
  4. Connect your cable box, streaming device, disc player, or console to the receiver’s matching HDMI inputs, not to the TV. The receiver passes their video on to the TV.
  5. Turn on the receiver, then the TV.
  6. Switch the TV to the HDMI input you just used. You should see the receiver’s menu when you press SETUP on the Denon remote.

Step 3: Set up the receiver

What you do here depends on your TV’s port.

  1. Press SETUP on the Denon remote. The menu appears on your TV.
  2. Select Video, then HDMI Setup.
  3. Set HDMI Control to On. This lets the TV remote change the receiver’s volume and lets the two turn off together. It’s off by default.
  4. If your TV has ARC (not eARC), set ARC to On. It’s off by default. With an eARC TV, the receiver enables eARC automatically.
  5. Check that HDMI Audio Out is set to AVR (the default). If it’s set to TV, sound plays from the TV speakers instead of yours.
  6. Press SETUP to close the menu.

Step 4: Set up the TV

TV menus differ by brand, so the names below are general. Look in your TV’s sound settings.

  1. Turn on eARC if your TV has a separate eARC setting. Denon specifically warns that some eARC TVs need this turned on.
  2. Set the TV’s sound output to the external audio system or receiver, not the TV speakers.
  3. Turn on the TV’s HDMI device control (HDMI-CEC). Many brands use their own name for it, so check the TV’s manual if you can’t find it.
  4. Turn every HDMI device off and back on once so they recognize each other. Denon recommends doing this again any time you add or unplug an HDMI device.

Step 5: Test it

  1. Select the TV Audio input on the receiver (with the remote’s input buttons or the SOURCE SELECT knob).
  2. Open a streaming app on the TV and play something. Sound should come from your speakers.
  3. Press volume up on the TV remote. The receiver’s volume should change.
  4. Turn the TV off. With HDMI Control on, the receiver should go into standby too.

If the TV remote doesn’t change the volume, recheck that HDMI Control is on at both ends. The receiver can’t control devices that don’t support HDMI control, and Denon notes some TVs only support part of it.

If your TV has no ARC or eARC port

You can still use the S570BT. You just need a second cable for sound.

  1. Connect an HDMI cable from any TV HDMI input to the receiver’s HDMI OUT MONITOR jack. This carries the picture.
  2. Connect an optical (Toslink) cable from the TV’s optical audio output to the receiver’s OPTICAL1 input.
  3. Select TV Audio on the receiver. OPTICAL1 is assigned to TV Audio by default, so no menu change is needed.
  4. In the TV’s sound settings, turn on its optical output. Denon notes some devices ship with digital audio output turned off.

If you used a different optical jack, change the assignment under SETUP > Inputs > Input Assign.

eARC vs ARC vs optical: what you get

Connection Receiver setting What it can carry from the TV
eARC Turns on automatically Adds high-bitrate formats such as multichannel PCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD
ARC Set ARC to On TV sound over HDMI, but without eARC’s high-bitrate support
Optical (no ARC) None (OPTICAL1 = TV Audio) TV sound on a separate cable

Whichever you use, the S570BT is a 5.2-channel receiver. It plays surround on up to five speakers plus subwoofers, so it won’t create overhead Dolby Atmos effects even when the TV sends an Atmos stream.

Handy HDMI settings once you’re connected

  • TV Audio Switching (On by default): the receiver switches to TV Audio by itself when it gets a command from the TV over HDMI.
  • Power Off Control (All by default): the receiver goes to standby when the TV turns off. Choose Off if you want the receiver to keep playing.
  • HDMI Pass Through (On by default): the TV still gets a picture from the selected input while the receiver is in standby. Its power light glows red when this is on. Use Pass Through Source to choose which input.
  • 4K/8K Signal Format (Enhanced by default, under Video): choose 8K Enhanced for 8K 60 Hz or 4K 120 Hz. If the picture drops out, switch back to Enhanced or Standard.
  • Audio Delay (press OPTION): if voices don’t match lips, add 0 to 200 ms of delay. It’s saved separately for each input.

Troubleshooting

eARC TV, but no TV sound from the speakers

  • Confirm the receiver is on the TV Audio input.
  • Turn on the eARC setting in the TV, if it has one.
  • Check Inputs > Input Assign. Denon says eARC won’t work if an HDMI input connector is assigned to TV Audio. Remove that HDMI assignment, then restart the receiver and the TV.

ARC TV, but no TV sound

ARC is off by default, and a factory reset turns it off again. Set ARC to On under HDMI Setup, and check that the cable is in the TV’s ARC port, not a regular HDMI port. If you recently reset the receiver, our S570BT reset guide lists the other settings that go back to Off.

No picture on the TV

  • Make sure the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the receiver.
  • Check that the cable goes to HDMI OUT MONITOR, not one of the inputs.
  • For content protected with HDCP 2.2 or 2.3 (common with 4K streaming and discs), both the player and the TV must support that version.
  • If you set 8K Enhanced, try Enhanced or Standard.

Still silent

If the TV and HDMI settings all look right, the problem may be the speakers, the sound mode, or mute. Our S570BT no-sound guide works through those in order. And if you haven’t set speaker distances and levels yet, set up your speakers next so dialogue and effects land where they should.

Denon’s diagrams for both hookups are on the Connecting a TV page of the AVR-S570BT manual.
